International veterinary experts to speak at Hoofcare 2007

2 February 2007

Dr Christer Bergsten DVM, from the Swedish Dairy Association and Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, and Dr David Logue FRCVS, Professor of Food Animal Disease, Glasgow Veterinary School will be among the international line up of speakers at Hoofcare 2007, the biennial European Conference for Cattle Hoof Trimmers.

Hoofcare 2007 will take place from 1–4 July 2007 at Reaseheath Agricultural College, near Nantwich in Cheshire, UK, and is already attracting cattle hoof trimming experts and bovine health specialists from all over Europe and the United States.

Dr Bergsten has witnessed lameness problems all over the world, and has been inolved in some prominent bovine welfare research projects. These include Cow foot 2000, an epidemiological field study of 100 Swedish dairy herds over several years, LAMECOW, a three-year EU-funded study on the influence of flooring systems on claw health and behavior, and intensive research on the spread of digital dermatitis between and within larger herds.

Before accepting a professorship at Glasgow Veterinary School in 2005, Dr Logue spent much of his working life at the Scottish Agricultural College (SAC). He is currently an RCVS specialist in cattle health and dairy production, and a Diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management.

Tony Richardson, Chairman of the UK National Association of Cattle Hoof Trimmers (NACFT) who are organising this prestigious event, says, “By bringing together recognised authorities on bovine health, nutrition and welfare with those working in the field as hoof trimmers and cattle vets, we are ensuring that the very latest research is applied in everyday work situations. Information sharing at this level can only prove beneficial to the dairy and beef industry as a whole.”

As well as a wealth of international speakers and workshop-style demonstrations, Hoofcare2007 includes an exhibition showcasing the products and equipment of many leading manufacturers from all over the world. Delegates will also have the opportunity to take part in an organised excursion to Europe’s premier annual agricultural event, the Royal Show, at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.
